June E. Burton-Best
Age 87 ~ Wilmington
In the morning of Sunday, August 28, June Elizabeth Burton-Best passed away peacefully after a stubborn struggle with congestive heart failure at her home.

June Burton-Best was born in Wilmington, DE, one of three daughters of the late Walter and Anna Ford White, and sister to Margaret, died in childhood and Shirley, her closest friend, who preceded her in death in 1993.

A lifelong resident of Wilmington, June graduated from Wilmington High School in 1947. She met her first husband, William G. Burton, a WWII army veteran in 1949, and married in 1950. They had five children, raising them near Bellefonte, cooking tens of thousands of meals, tons of laundry, taking care of an assorted menagerie of snakes, skunks (one a pet, the others requiring tomato sauce and the outside tub), birds, rodents, and dogs and cats, and, particularly because of the boys, was a renowned negotiator with teachers and school principals. William Burton passed away in 1981.

After retiring from Sears Roebuck, she remained active including participating in Senior Olympics (volleyball and bowling) and doing the things she loved most: gardening, arts and crafts, and entertaining others at senior centers by singing and creating costumes, in musicals (her favorite being “South Pacific"), where she met and married her husband, Lewis Best, who shared her love of bowling with their friends at Pleasant Hill Lanes.

To mourn her loss, she leaves behind daughter, Christine Steele (Dennis); sons Michael (Linda), Ronald, and Thomas, of and near Wilmington, eldest son, William Jr, of Corvallis, OR, and 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren and she will be greatly missed by her many friends at FRAIMS, Mid County Senior Centers and the Claymont Choir.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to those caretakers from St. Francis Homecare who helped her through her last months of life.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made in her name to Compassionate Care Hospice, 248 East Chestnut Hill Rd., Suite 4, Newark, DE 19713.

A viewing will be held on Friday, September 2, beginning at 10am at, the McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, where a funeral service will follow at 11am. Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.
