Lola Mae Simon, 92, died quietly on November 2, 2016. A lifelong resident of Wilmington, she was born to Clara and Alexander Schaffer. In the 1930s and 40s, Lola was a member of the Talleyville Drum and Bugle Corps, and worked at DuPont during World War II before her marriage. She loved family events, and family and friends will miss her homemade spaghetti sauce, carrot cake, and Christmas cookies. She was also involved with ongoing activities at Peninsula-McCabe United Methodist Church. She was score keeper and concessions manager at Naaman’s Little League, where both of her sons played. She was an avid baseball fan through her life and followed the Phillies each summer. A wordsmith, Lola was particularly fond of the daily cryptogram in the News-Journal. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Pierce Simon, two sons, Pete, Jr. (Mary Bohn) and Jeffrey (Carol), three grandchildren, Jamie, Lelah and Keith, three great-grandchildren Jeffrey, Ella Mae, and Jack, her brother Michael Pennington (Marguerite) and niece, Jennifer McLaughlin (Brian), her great-niece and nephew, Abby and Colin, her nephew, Allen Pennington (Lindsay), her great nephew and niece, AJ and Mia, her niece Catherine Chase (Ryan), and other numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Elizabeth Fulmer, Peggy Loessin and Patricia Cooper and her brother, Joseph Pennington, Jr. A service will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE 19720 where friends may call from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the adjoining memorial park.
