LOUIS R. THONGES

Louis Richard Thonges died on Thursday December 1, 2016 after a long illness. Louis was born to Louis and Emily Thonges, on October 13, 1936, and raised in Manhattan, NY. His parents and sister Mary Ann predeceased him. During his summer vacations from school, he worked on his Uncle Raymond Shafarzek’s Farm in Roscoe, NY, along with his cousin Bernie. Those were good times for him, and he and Bernie became best friends. Lou attended St. George Academy in his Freshman year of High School and then transferred to the Machine and Metals Trade High School where he graduated in 1953. He then enlisted in the Air Force, during the tail end of the Korean War. Lou was honorably discharged after serving for four years, active duty and four years in the Reserves. He was a veteran and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Lou’s passion was shooting. He belonged to the Chase Manhattan Rifle Club where he earned many badges and trophies as a champion and marksman. He was also a lifetime member of the NRA. Lou married Carole, who preceded him in death in 1995. Their last residence was in Havertown, PA. Lou and Carole were actively involved in their church, The Presbyterian Church of Llanerch and made many friends. They had a daughter Lisa, who lives in NC with her family. In 2001, he moved to Wilmington, DE and became a member of First Presbyterian Church, Main St. in Newark, DE. On March 20, 2010 he married and is survived by his wife, Linda E. Gardner-Thonges and her children, Andrew, Peter and John and their spouses and children. Louis is survived by his daughter, Lisa Foust, her husband Richard and his grandchildren, Mitchell and Kiersten. He is also survived by his nephews, Peter Horn and Eric Horn; nieces, Heidi Sowala and Barbara Howard, along with their spouses and children; cousins Bernard Shafarzek, Anne Bestenheider and Erwine Haering along with their spouses and children. Lou was a loving and gentle man and will be sorely missed. “…Come follow me and I will give you rest” A viewing will be held on Monday December 5, from 6-8 pm. at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808. A service will be held Tuesday morning at the funeral home at 11am. Reverend Steve Brundage will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, 352 S. Gulph Rd.
