Sophia Puit, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on December 16, 2016.

Born on July 7, 1922 in Wilmington, Delaware, she was a daughter of the late Stefania and Michael Griskevich. Her husband of 40 years, Charles M. Puit, preceded her in death on September 18, 1981.

After she retired from the Sheriff's Office in Wilmington, she worked part time at Brinton's (Bill's) Florist.

She was a lifetime member of St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church, where she would help make pierogies for the church bazaar.

She was a devoted and caring mother who always let you know what was on her mind. She was a great cook and baker and seemed to have endless energy when preparing a holiday celebration for her family. Her dinners were so delicious, sometimes all you heard at the table were forks clinking on plates as everyone enjoyed the wonderful meal. She liked to garden and spend time in her beautiful yard at the house she lived in for 60 years. She had a fondness for animals, including feeding the birds, and cherished many pets over the years.

In addition to her parents and husband, Sophia was preceded in death by a son, Mark, in 2000. She never seemed to fully recover from his loss. She was also predeceased by her brothers, John and Alex Griskevich and her sister, Eugenia Slider.

She will be remembered by her daughter, Alex Ashley and husband Gene, caregiver and groundskeeper in later years, of Wilmington; son Charles and wife Ann, of Middlebury Center, PA and son Michael and wife Kathy, of Middletown, with whom she lived very comfortably for the last two years. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Michele Bressler and husband Jeff, of Bear; grandson, Charles Puit, Jr. and wife Annemarie, of Wilmington and grandson, Matthew Puit of Miami, Florida. Also surviving are her great grandchildren, Kyle Bressler and CJ and Maddy Puit.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church, 2300 West Huntington Drive, Wilm., DE 19808 with Father Barnabas Fravel officiating, where friends may call from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery.

The family suggests honoring the memory of Sophia Puit by sending a contribution to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
