Gertrude Jewell John passed away peacefully on January 25, 2017 after a full and beautiful life.

She was born in August of 1919 in Montreal, Canada, the daughter of Oscar Pepin and Louise Pepin. In 1952 she moved to Wilmington, Delaware with her husband, Leslie W, and their three children. Gertrude was very active in assisting him in his contracting business but also worked for a brief time for the DuPont Company and pursued a career in real estate working for Goldsborough in Fairfax. She was a member of Business and Professional’s Women’s Organisation and the social sorority Beta Sigma Phi. She also enjoyed playing golf and bridge. Her husband Leslie passed away in 1969. Gertrude remarried in 1978 to James R. John. Their winters were spent in Florida playing golf and enjoying the beach until his death in 1999.

In addition to her two husbands, Gertrude was predeceased by her son Richard R. Jewell, a sister, and two brothers. She is survived by her sister Madeleine Bourgon of Montreal, Canada, son Leslie A. Jewell, daughter Gail Diksa both of Garnet Valley, PA and seven grandchildren: Christopher Jewell (Melanie), Jennifer Jewell Stunkard, Brandon Jewell (Kait), Danielle Jewell Vaccaro ( Frank), Laura Beth Jewell, Jeffrey Diksa and Brian Diksa ( Laura). She also leaves behind 8 great grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, February 1 at 10 am at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 7 Sharpley Rd., Wilmington, DE with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am. Interment will follow Mass in All Saints Cemetery.

The family is very grateful for the assistance it received in her last days through Season’s Hospice and Visiting Angels.
