Jeanette Trice McDowell, age 95, passed away on January 25, 2017 at Chesapeake Manor Assisted Living.
She was born near American Corners, MD to the late Arthur Trice and Mary Ruth Benson. She was a member, trustee and treasurer of the Wilmington Primitive Baptist Church and also attended services at the Little Creek Primitive Baptist Church near Delmar. She graduated from Alexis I. DuPont High School and was a member of the April ‘43 class at the University of Delaware. She became a teacher of handicap children and was a member of the staff at the John Leach School for many years, retiring in 1984 as a teacher of the Special School in the A.I. DuPont Hospital for children. Jeanette has been a member of the Caesar Rodney Chapter, DAR since 1956 and was currently an associate member of the Colonial David Hall Chapter and the DAR State Officers Club. She was an Honorary Senior State President of the Delaware C.A.R. and served on the current Senior State Board of Management. She belonged to the Rehoboth Beach Country Club and had formerly been a member of the Village Improvement Association in Rehoboth. Her homes in Wilmington and Rehoboth all reflected her love of beauty, her joy of life and laughter, and happiness when gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. McDowell. Jeanette is survived by her son, John W. McDowell, Jr., her grandson, John W. McDowell, III (Barbara), her brother-in-law, Donald L. McDowell, her granddaughter, Elizabeth Cole, her great-grandchildren, Rabecca and Shelby and many loving cousins.

Friends may call on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at Wilmington Primitive Baptist Church 2911 N Van Buren St, Wilmington, DE 19802 where a service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, DE. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jeanette’s memory to the Wilmington Primitive Baptist Church.
