On February 21, 2017 Lois E. Kay died peacefully at the Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook, PA where she resided for the last ten years. Lois was a long time resident of Greenville, DE and Landenberg, PA. She is a graduate of Tower Hill School, Pomona College and Claremont Graduate College with a Master of Fine Arts. She taught art for many years at A.I. DuPont Middle School and H.B. DuPont Middle School and initiated the popular Arts in Schools program. As an artist Lois was an accomplished potter. She established a gallery and consignment shop in Centreville, DE called the Wind Bell to promote local arts and crafts. Upon retirement, Lois opened Terenelf Kennels and began breeding and showing Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Norwich Terriers. She became interested in Amish life and grew to love the Amish country in Chester County. Using her artistic talents, she documented Amish life in a series of photographs.
Lois was known for her sense of humor, artistic ability, big heart, story-telling and appreciation of diversity. As a mentor and friend she was recognized for bringing out the best in others, helping them discover abilities and achieve their personal goals.
She is the daughter of William C. and Margaret M. Kay (both deceased) and is survived by sisters Kathleen Kay, Margaret Pumphrey, Carolyn Wales and brother Cameron Kay; nieces and nephews; and dear friends Samuel and Mamie Stoltzfus and family, and James (“Bear”) and Colleen Bartzsch and son.
A private graveside service will be held at Lower Brandywine Cemetery
