GRACE LAWS SHOREY
Grace Laws Shorey, 90, of Wilmington, died on Sunday, March 19, 2017 peacefully at Foulk Manor North in Wilmington, DE. Born on July 22, 1926 in Snow Hill, MD, she was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Laws.
Grace was born and raised on her parents’ farm near Snow Hill. As a young woman she enjoyed music and played the piano at the local church. Her love of music manifested itself later in life with her joy of square dancing. Having been raised on the farm, Grace had a very strong work ethic and knew the value of a dollar. She instilled these traits in her children. After high School she attended Beacom College in Wilmington. Grace married Joseph Louis White in 1946 and they moved permanently to Delaware. Joe worked at DuPont and Grace got a job at Hyman Reiver & Co. on Market St. where she worked faithfully for 57 years helping put three boys through college. Joe died suddenly of a heart attack in 1970. Grace remarried in 1976 to Chester M. Shorey. For many years Grace was a member of DuPont Country Club where she loved to play bridge, dance and play golf with Chet. She also loved to watch the Phillies and Flyers on TV. They were happily married until 1992 when Chet died.
Grace encouraged the family to meet once a year at the beach. It became a priority to get her sons together every summer, even after they started their own families. When the grankids came along, she pitched in to provide help whenever it was needed. Every year for the past 40+ years the family has vacationed together at the beach. Grace was affectionately known in the family as “Mama”, a name she inherited from her mother. Mama will be greatly missed and always remembered.
Grace is survived by her three sons, Gerald Lee White (Deborah), Joseph Louis White (Kathi), and William Jeffrey White (Cindy); Grandchildren, Elizabeth Kapp (Dan), Emily Roberson, Matthew White(Corey), Elise Snell (Nate), Samantha Bishop (Bryan), Nicholas White; Great-Grandchildren, Mitchell Bolton, Ricky Wiggins, Hoyt Kapp, Shane Roberson, Kate Roberson, Mildred Roberson, Jackson Snell; Nieces and Nephews, Rebecca Laws, Barry Laws, Linda Culp, Sharon Gardenhour, Jan Houghton, Jim Laws, Christine Lewis Radebaugh, Robert Lee Lewis, Jr.; Sister-in –law, Betty Laws.
