William R. Russell, son of the late Joseph and Helen Russell passed away peacefully at Brandywine Nursing Home on March 30th at the age of 94, one day shy of his birthday. After graduating from P.S. Dupont High School, William served his country in WWll. He participated in the Normandy Invasion with the 355th Engineering Regiment. After being honorably discharged in 1945, William returned home and after culinary school became an Executive Chef at the Hotel DuPont. Upon retiring he became an Executive Chef at the Blue Gold Club at the University of Delaware.

During the war, William met Stephania Frederick, who would become his wife and the love of his life. William said “the moment he heard her beautiful Polish voice, he just knew she was THE one!” They would spend the next several decades traveling the U.S. and Europe with their very closest and dearest friends and on occasion, with their beloved German shepherd, Captain. Besides traveling, William’s second passion was ballroom dancing with his wife and friends at the DuPont Country Club. They were married for 66 years when Stephania passed away in 2013.

William was a joy to be around. He possessed a great sense of humor and never seemed to take himself or life too seriously, yet he always appreciated life immensely. Those who knew him well, will certainly, miss his mischievous sense of humor and dynamic personality.

William is survived by his sister, Jean Wilson of Claymont and brother, Charles Russell of Mississippi.

Special thanks to Vitas Hospice, Foulk Manor South and Brandywine
Retirement Home for their compassionate care. A very warm thank you to William's Graylyn Crest neighbors and friends for their many years of love and friendship.
