Ida May McDaniel Swain, age 98, of Wilmington, Delaware died at home on July 16, 2017.

Born and raised in Wilmington, she graduated from PS Dupont High School in Wilmington in 1937 and attended Beacom College.

Ida May held the oral history for her extended family and could tell you the stories of the many people she encountered in her long and rich life.

Her work career was structured around her family and community, working at Bayard School, then as one of the original employees at Blue Cross Blue Shield, and then at William H McDaniel, Inc.

She was active in the community, including the Leader Corp in high school, a member of Aldersgate UMC since 1955, active with Altar Guild, and also with the Church Sewing Group.

She is survived by her son, Richard Swain, and his wife Dianne; brother Otis McDaniel of Dover, DE, and sister Esther (McDaniel) Steele of Wilmington, grand-daughter Janice Swain of Kaui, Hawaii, step-granddaughter Lori Swain, her nieces and nephews Tom, Kathy, Patty, Susan, Salle & Bill McDaniel, Terry Haskell McDonald, Peter Steele, Douglas, Michael & Jeffrey McDaniel and many great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband L. Howard Swain, her sons Stephen Swain and Robert Swain, her mother Helen (King) Fox and stepfather Charles Fox, her father William H. McDaniel and stepmother Esther H. McDaniel and her brother William H. McDaniel, Jr.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 20, at Aldersgate U.M. Church 2313 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803, with visitation starting at 10:30am, service at 11am, followed by a reception, at the home of Kathy McDaniel & David Cerney.
