Herbert F. Steigler, age 86, of Wilmington, Delaware, died peacefully at Foulk Manor South on August 8, 2017. Born in Harrison, New York in July of 1931, he was the son of William and Gertrude Steigler and the youngest of four brothers. An outstanding athlete at Harrison High School and the New York Metropolitan area, he went on to Syracuse University where he received his degree in marketing and was a member of its 1953 championship football team that played in its first Orange Bowl game. After four years of ROTC, he graduated as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force and served as a navigator for five years, four of which were in Waco, Texas. He married his high school and college sweetheart, Arlene, upon their college graduation in 1954 and were married for 62 years. They moved to Wilmington in 1959.

Ever the consummate salesman, Herb worked for several life insurance companies and lastly for Slocomb Industries for 25 years as sales manager. He was active in several national vinyl industry organizations holding leadership positions. A member of The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd for 54 years, he served in various positions. He greatly treasured the support and friendship of his church community. He enjoyed traveling and family vacations on the Outer Banks of North Carolina as well as cheering for the Yankees and his Syracuse teams. A great handyman, he loved splitting wood and working in his lovely garden in the woods with his dog faithfully at his side. He will always be remembered for his friendly smile, positive outlook and cheerful disposition.

Herb was preceded in death by his three brothers and his daughter, Chrissy. In addition to Arlene, he is survived by his daughter, Sarah Graham and her husband, John, of Wilmington, his son David and his wife, Denise, of Arlington, VA and his grandsons, Wyeth Steigler of Statesboro, GA and Grayson Steigler of Arlington. The family would like to thank the staff of Foulk Manor South and Compassionate Care Hospice for their kindness and service.

A memorial service will be held Monday, August 14 at 11:00 o’clock at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1530 Foulk Road, Wilmington, Delaware 19803. Friends may call an hour before the service. There will be a reception in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
