Thomas H. Fort, Sr. died August 10, 2017. He was 82.

Tom was born in Springfield, Missouri where he grew up. He received his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Missouri, and a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Delaware.

Tom served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 until 1961 and then joined the Naval Reserves where he continued to serve until retiring as a Captain in 1981. For 36 years, he worked for the DuPont Company, holding numerous positions in financial analysis and management.

An accomplished athlete, Tom was an avid runner and completed races well into his seventies. He remained involved in the sport by serving as an official for track and field events, Treasurer and President of the Delaware Sports Club, and President of the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Delaware Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1984.

Tom was also a tireless volunteer. He served on the board of the YMCA of Delaware, including a period as Chairman of the International Committee; he held numerous positions in service at both the Peninsula-McCabe United Methodist Church and Ebenezer United Methodist Church.

Tom is survived by his wife, Gretchen; his sons, Thomas, Jr. and Charles (Julie); his sister Judy Young (Jerry); sister-in-law, Janell Schmitt; and five nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Tom will be held Friday, August 18 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 525 Polly Drummond Hill Rd, Newark, DE 19711. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 and concluding with a reception in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Tom’s memory may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
