David (Dave) L. Quillen, 58, of Landenberg, PA, passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, on August 25, 2017, in the comfort of his home with his loving family by his side.
Dave was born in Wilmington, DE, and lived there most of his life, until he and his family moved to Landenberg. He attended Brandywine High School and after graduation, Dave worked at his Father’s service station to put himself through college at the University of Delaware. Dave graduated with a Bachelor’s in Political Science and furthered his college accomplishments with a Master’s in International Relations. A holiday season job at the former Strawbridge & Clothier store in Christiana Mall, led him to meet his wife Debbie (Studaker). They were married October 20, 1984, and shared a great life together with their daughter Kelsey.
Dave remained a Blue Hen football fan to the end, and as a season ticket holder, he followed the team to Chattanooga, TN, to celebrate their championship season in 2003. He loved to read and had to have that hard bound book in his hands. He could be found during his free time reading books related to politics, American history and various historical military events. Dave was also an avid weather watcher and spent many hours tracking storm coverage when Mother Nature raised her ire. Dave was the family comedian at heart and liked to make everyone laugh and provide the comedic relief at any gathering. To support his desire for entertaining, Dave was known to create nick names for his family members, pets and others in his life. He and his brother also developed a language and a communication style with each other that only they understood. Dave, was a faithful, loving master to his many canine companions from their young puppyhood through their elderly days.
Dave worked in the healthcare industry for many years and was employed by health insurance providers, pharmaceutical manufacturers in sales, and in marketing for two Delaware radiology practices. His dream and ultimate goal was always to be his own boss. The dream became a reality when he formed his own company, BCSD Sales Associates, and served as an independent sales representative for blasting and coatings companies.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents John W. and E. Miriam (Haverstick) Quillen. Dave is survived by his wife Debbie and, his beloved daughter Kelsey of Newark, his brother Bruce and his wife Jane (Hawke) Quillen of Charleston, SC, his paternal Aunt Juanita (Quillen) and Harry Springer of Dover. Dave also shared special relationship with his in-laws, where they treated him like their own brother, David and Rhonda (Studaker) Yake of Newark, Scott and Kristy (Studaker) Hohensee of New Baltimore, MI, and Jeff and Carol (Studaker) Dicus of Croswell, MI. Nieces and nephews Christopher, Rachel, Becky, Allison, Erin, Scott Jr and Kylee all held a special place in his heart as he watched them grow up with his daughter.
Family and friends are asked to join the family for a memorial celebration of Dave’s life on Friday, September 8, 2017, at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home located at 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 12:00 p.m.
