Robert Hallsted passed away quietly on September 8, 2017. Son of Harry and Marie Tullis Hallsted, Bob was born December 19, 1915 and raised in a farm near Blanchester, Ohio. He graduated with honors from Wilmington College, OH in 1937 and began a teaching career originally with Camden OH H.S. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in September, 1941 and earned his wings as a navigator. Following a few months as an instructor, he was transferred to the Air Transport Command and assigned to the New Castle Army Air Base in DE. While stationed there in 1943 he met his wife of 64 years Alice Brown. During the war he travelled to every continent except Antarctica as his missions ferried troops and wounded soldiers around the world. Finishing his service in Tokyo he was promoted to captain and received an air medal.

He and Alice returned to Camden to resume teaching and he earned a master's degree at Ohio State. He then moved permanently to Claymont, DE and began teaching at Wilmington High School. During the next 26 years he earned his Ed.D at Columbia Teachers College, served as Principal of Warner Junior High School and finished his career as Director of Personnel of the Wilmington School System. After retirement he served as Executive Director of the Delaware Association of School Administrators for 6 years.

Bob was a longtime member of Peninsula-McCabe United Methodist Church and served as past president and a member of Wilmington Kiwanis Club for 50 years. At age 94 he joined the Claymont Lions Club and also cruised to Antarctica to complete seeing all the continents. Bob loved helping organize biennial Hallsted reunions, woodworking and making furniture, golfing, playing bridge and poker, and following his beloved Cincinnati Reds and Ohio State Buckeyes.

After the passing of his wife Alice in 2007 Bob moved to Shipley Manor where he continued to reside. Bob is also predeceased by brothers Ralph, Dale, Harry and Ted plus sisters Rosalie, Suzanne, Ruth and Joann. He is survived by sons Robert Jr (Denise) of Middletown, Steve (Elaine) of Wilmington, and daughter Nancy Mitchell (Robert) of Elkton, MD along with 6 grandchildren and 7 grandchildren.

A service will be held at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington on Saturday Sept. 16th with viewing at 1:30 PM and service following at 2:30 PM. Burial will be private.
