WILLEM H. VAN RIJNSOEVER

Willem H. Van Rijnsoever, age76, passed away on November 17, 2017 at Christiana Hospital. He is survived by his son, Brian (Maia) sister Hennie, many nieces and nephews, and his two pugs.

Willem was born in Utrecht, Netherlands in February of 1941. He sailed the world as a young Dutch Merchant Marine after he graduated high school. Willem spoke seven languages and enjoyed sharing the stories of his travels to the most remote parts of the world.

Willem moved to the United States in 1966. He first started working as a shoe salesman on Kirkwood Hwy in Wilmington. He soon became a salesman at Jake’s Ship Chandler at the Port of Wilmington. In 1983 he started his own ship services business, Amstel Marine Service. He was a successful entrepreneur beloved by many in his field.

In 2000 Willem suffered a stroke and lost his wife, Elizabeth Ann, a year later. Willem spent the rest of his years in the care of his son, Brian. Despite his disability Willem lived a full life. He particularly enjoyed his time at the Edgemoor Community Center where he socialized with many of his friends, played Bingo, and lost card games to the ladies.

Willem was a devoted husband, father, and soccer coach. He loved spending time with his wife at the Casino in Atlantic City. In his later years Willem loved watching soccer and Hogan’s Heroes on TV and chatting with his big, loving Dutch family on Skype. He was an avid coin collector, and loved his two pugs.

A funeral service will be held at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE at 5:00 pm on Saturday November 25, where family and friends are invited to call after 4:00 pm. Burial will be private.
