Helen M. (Grant) Godwin 90, wife of the late James E. Godwin, of Millsboro DE, formerly of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Monday January 22, 2018. Helen’s recent declining health followed a 12 year battle with Dementia/Alzheimer’s.
Helen will be dearly missed by her daughters, Linda (Donald) Welsh, her caregivers, Beverly (Gino) Jamison, and son Larry (Josephine) Godwin. Nanny’s “Brown Bag Christmas” will be a cherished memory for her 9 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and 2 great great granddaughters; Helen is also survived by her sister, Grace Ludwig; brother-in- laws, David (Joyce) and Gregg (Norma) Godwin and cousins, nieces, nephew and the family feline Tiger.
Born August 14, (a birthday she shared with her grandson Wesley Grant), she was the devoted wife of “Harv” for 66 years who passed away in 2014. She was also preceded by her parents Bessie (Minner) and Norval Grant; a step-brother Oscar Grant, brother-in-law Melvin Ludwig and nephew Gary Ludwig.
Raised in Newark, she was a graduate of Newark High School class of 1945. She enjoyed helping with class reunions and lunch with classmates. Helen worked at Almart, later Montgomery Ward, retiring in 1983.
Always interested in family history, she passed on her love of geneology to her son. She was an avid reader and shared that with her daughters. She also enjoyed playing games, puzzles and was quite the card shark. You had to be on your toes for the slight of hand, and the innocent look that always followed when she was caught. Helen was a member of the Delaware T’s Antique Automobile Club and thoroughly enjoyed touring with her husband and club members in their Model A up and down the East Coast. During those trips she would collect a decorative thimble and has amassed quite an extensive display.
The family will be forever grateful for the loving and compassionate home care shown to Helen by the many aides from Christiana Care, and more recently, Delaware Hospice. With them, her quality of life was vastly improved.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday January 26 from 1-2pm followed by a service at 2pm at Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel, 2220 N. Dupont Highway New Castle, DE 19720.
