Ryan M. Callahan, 31, of Newark, DE passed away on January 20, 2018.
Ryan lived a busy and full life. He was involved with Special Olympics for 20 years and he excelled at volleyball, basketball, tennis, boxing, track, soccer, power-lifting and bowling. An avid bowler, he was known to be a fixture at several local bowling alleys where he had formed many friendships. For several years, Ryan was involved with Easter Seals. He was a member and acolyte at Cedars United Methodist Church; and he was planning to participate for the seventh year in the upcoming Polar Bear plunge. Ryan especially enjoyed Fitness Fridays at the Hockessin Athletic Center.
He Is survived by his parents, Michael and Connie Callahan; 2 brothers – Justin Callahan (Sarah) and their daughter, Tessa, and Corey Callahan (Katie Basara); 3 uncles: Craig “Doc” (Anita) Gery, Jeff Callahan (Diane Hayden), and Jim Callahan (Keli); maternal grandmother, Joan Gery; paternal grandparents, Robert and Sondra Callahan; and great-aunt, Betty Kunkle.
A viewing will be held from 6-8pm, Monday, January 29 at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, where the funeral service will be held at 1:30pm, Tuesday, January 30. Interment will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park. The family suggests honoring the memory of Ryan Callahan by sending a contribution to Ryan’s beloved Special Olympics DE, 619 S.
