Eugene E. Vanover, 87, of Wilmington DE passed away peacefully at St. Francis Hospital Compassionate Care on January 31. Gene was born in 1930 in Clintwood Virginia, one of seven children to Edwin and Pearl Vanover. He has one surviving brother, Joel Vanover (Bonny) and numerous nieces and nephews. Gene enjoyed 66 years of wedded bliss with his wife Estelle who survives him. He is father to Eugenia “Jeannie” Vanover and Marguerite Pennington (Michael) of Wilmington, Edward Vanover (Jeannie) of Laytonsville, MD, and Donald Vanover (Patty) of West Grove, PA. Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren include Jennifer (Brian McLaughlin, Abby, and Colin), Allen Pennington (Lindsay, Aj, and Mia), Katie Saturno (Pierre Santini), Tommy Saturno (Jenn and Solomon), Catherine (Ryan Chase), Geoffrey, Kevin, Rebecca, Monica, and Mary Vanover.

Gene graduated from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He had a long and productive career as a chemist at DuPont, DXI, and US Bioscience until his retirement at age 70. He enjoyed his work, toiling in his gardens, being a handyman for his home and neighbors’ homes. He also enjoyed politics, bowling, model trains, puzzles, books, and professional wrestling. He was a very passionate and compassionate man who dedicated his life and shared his good fortune with his family and friends.

Please join the family for a viewing from 6-9pm on Friday, February 2, 2018 at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilm., DE and a funeral mass at IHM, where he was a parishioner for over 50 years, 4701 Weldin Rd, Wilmington, DE 19803, on Saturday, February 3 at 10am. Burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Francis Hospital Compassionate Care Hospice or the Blood Bank of Delmarva where Gene was a proud blood donor for many years.
