MARGARET (BAKER) WOOD

Margaret (Baker) Wood, age 93, formerly of Greenville, DE and Swarthmore, PA, passed away peacefully at Regency in Wilmington, DE on Tuesday, January 30, 2018. She was born in Blackpool, England, and was the daughter of the late Mrs. Elsie Lavin. A WW II British war veteran, she served in the Royal Army Payroll Corps-Women's Auxilliary Territorial Service (WATS) from 1942 – 1946. Upon her discharge, she returned to civilian life and married her husband, John H. Wood (also a WW II Veteran of the RAF) in 1947. Her husband of 68 years died in January 2015. In December 1965, the family immigrated to the United States as part of the "British Wave." (Mr. Wood was an aircraft design engineer for Boeing Helicopter.) Margaret went on to have a successful career in sales and sales management for more than 30 years before retirement from Strawbridge and Clothier and then Strawbridge's (later owned by Macy's and the May Company). She also had her own Tupperware Distributorship when living in Swarthmore and received many of the company's top-level sales awards and achievements. She was also active with her church, Trinity Episcopal, where she taught Sunday school for several years. Margaret also participated in fundraising campaigns for the Daughters of the British Empire (The DBE) and other humanitarian organizations when she was in Tupperware.
Margaret was very artistic and enjoyed sketching, needlepoint, crotchet, and embroidery. She also was very talented in designing and sewing her own clothes. An avid mystery and classics reader, she could often be found enjoying a new book or re-reading one of the books from her own personal library, including the poems and literary works of William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. She also enjoyed attending the theatre and "great" music...some of her favorites being Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserable, and the great voices of opera singers Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, and Placido Domingo. Additionally, she had a tremendous heart for animals, and enjoyed visits to her daughter's home in Berks County, PA to visit with horses, cats, and dogs. In her later years, Margaret and (her husband John), enjoyed an active lifestyle for many years, including walking, swimming, and travel.
Margaret is survived by her two children, Lesley Wood of Morgantown, PA and Susan Morgan of Claymont, DE, a son-in-law, Raymond Gromis of Morgantown, PA, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for April. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Shriner's Hospital for Children, Omaha Boys Town, or to a local animal rescue or veteran's service organization.
