John G. “Jack” Dickinson, age 85 of Wilmington, Delaware passed away on Monday, February 5, 2018 due to complications from cancer. Jack was born in Glens Falls, NY on October 1st, 1932 to John T. Dickinson and Betty Bowen Dickinson. He completed his undergraduate studies at Colgate University and received a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Connecticut.
He moved to Delaware around 1958 with his first wife, Johanne, to take a job with the Dupont Company where he worked for almost 50 years. He loved his work at DuPont. The most exciting and impactful part of Jack’s long career with DuPont was his time spent as a member of the titanium dioxide technical marketing team at the Chestnut Run site of DuPont. Jack was a respected and knowledgeable consultant to his global coatings customers. His contributions to the diverse teams supporting these customers often earned Marketing Excellence Award recognition. He was recognized as a global expert in the coatings industry, a mentor to many professionals and was very respected by his co-workers. He continued to value the relationships he had there in the years since he retired.
Jack spent his retirement years with his family, developing his interest in birds, and continuing to surf fish. He was an avid supporter of his local police and fire departments as well as being an enthusiast of local music.
He is survived by his sister Betsey McKearnan of Stockbridge, MA, Johanne, and the three children they had; John Guy Dickinson Jr. of Oregon, Gregory Russell Dickinson of California, and Susan Cambron Beck of Wilmington. He also has three granddaughters; Sophie and Ellen Dickinson of California and Elizabeth Cambron of Wilmington.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 24th at 4:00 pm at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike (Rt. 202 South of Silverside Road), Wilmington, DE 19803 where friends may call from 3:00-4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Music School of Delaware, 4101 Washington Street, Wilmington, DE 19802.
