Dorothy Estelle England Davis, age 99, went to the Lord on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at her residence in Wilmington, DE. Dorothy was the daughter of the late Roy Ray and Estelle M. England, and sister of the late Virginia Clementine Sullivan Dolle. Dorothy’s husband of 55 years, Thomas Davis, passed away on December 23, 1999.
Dorothy worked professionally for the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce as Executive Secretary to the President and as Assistant Corporate Secretary to the Board for 30 years.
Dorothy was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Wilmington for 67 years and served in many capacities over that time. She also served as a volunteer for the Food Pantry at St. Stephen’s for over 20 years.
Dorothy was a woman small in stature but one who possessed a large heart for those in need. For most of her adult life she supported numerous charities across the US with a steady stream of financial contributions. As she put it, “They have so little and I have so much.”
Dorothy had a keen analytical mind right up to the very end of her life and was quick to relate stories with significant detail to those who visited her. She enjoyed a small glass of tawny port wine most afternoons, especially when she had company. She also was a faithful viewer of “Jeopardy” on TV, and everyone knew not to call her on the phone from 7:00 to 7:30 when it was on. Dorothy loved God and near the end looked forward to being united with Him and reunited with Tom. She loved to have Bible passages read to her and over the course of her life had read the Bible cover to cover herself at least 5 times. Dorothy was an inspiration to everyone who knew her as she demonstrated grace, dignity and compassion as integral parts of her daily life.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 1301 North Broom Street, Wilmington, DE, 19806, or to a favorite charity.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 24 at 11:00 am at Druid Ridge Cemetery, 7900 Park Heights Avenue, Pikesville, MD, 21208. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 28 at 11:00 am with a luncheon reception to follow.
