James H. Bowman, 86, died on April 12, 2018. Originally from Rochester, New York, Jim graduated from Brighton High School. He continued his education at Cornell University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, after which he returned to Rochester to study medicine at the University of Rochester (NY) Medical School. After participation in the ROTC program at Cornell, Jim served in the military as a member of the U.S. Army Signal Corps and reached the rank of First Lieutenant. Following his discharge, Jim went to work for the DuPont Company, where he remained until his retirement in 1992.
Jim built his life around work and family. He was a self-taught piano player, an avid reader and vegetable gardener, volunteered with the Jaycees and other civic organizations, traveled throughout the world, and maintained a 300-bottle Bordeaux wine cellar for 35 years. He was also active at the Academy of Lifelong Learning/Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and graduated from the University of Delaware with a master’s degree in Liberal Arts in 2000 at the age of 70.
Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years, the love of his life, and his best friend, Nancy Harter Bowman; his four children, Lori Leonard, Linda Cox (Bob), Michael Bowman (Orietta), and Lisa Teetz; his five grandchildren, Christine Figueroa (Alex), Dan Leonard (Sarah), David Teetz, Joshua Cox and Rosalee Bowman; and four great-grandchildren, Paige Bell, Carmen Figueroa, Myles Figueroa and Ethan Leonard.
Friends may call on Friday, April 20, 2018 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 W. 13th Street, Wilmington, DE 19806 where a memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery.
