John V. Parmelee, age 82, of Wilmington, DE peacefully passed away April 15, 2018 surrounded by loved ones at Christiana Hospital following complications of Alzheimer’s. Born in Omaha, NE October 16, 1935, he lived in Amarillo, TX for 15 years before returning to Omaha for high school. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1957, having been active in ROTC and the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. After completing OCS, he was commissioned a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.
In 1960 he began working for Sheraton Hotels, eventually becoming personnel director of The French Lick Resort in French Lick, IN. In 1966 he began fundraising for The American Cancer Society in Richmond, VA, with other positions in Louisville, KY and Norfolk, VA. In 1970 he joined the Boy Scouts of America, beginning a 25 year career that included district executive positions in Valley Forge, PA, Pittsburgh, PA, and Bronx, NY before becoming financial director of the Del-Mar-Va Council in Wilmington, DE. In retirement he enjoyed several part time jobs, volunteering, going to the beach, and spending time with his two granddaughters.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Grace Grabeman Parmelee; sons Ted of Wilmington, DE, Tom (Beverly) of Wake Forest, NC, and Paul (Judy) of Havertown, PA, and granddaughters Meg and Macy Parmelee of Wake Forest, NC. He is preceded in death by his parents James L. and Hazel Lake Parmelee of Omaha, NE and brother James L. Parmelee Jr. of Gallup, NM.
A memorial service will be held Saturday May 5, 2018 at at 11 AM. at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1530 Foulk Rd, Wilmington, DE. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Boys Scouts of America, or the Alzheimer’s Association,
