Bernice J. Hummel, 91, formerly from State Route 93, Berwick, passed away quietly on Monday, April 30th, 2018 at the Shipley Manor Assisted Living facility in Wilmington Delaware.

She was born January 18, 1927 in Berwick and was the daughter of the late Walter Herring and Margaret Zimmerman. Bernice graduated from Berwick High School and was secretary of the class of 1944. She continued that responsibility until the class’s last reunion.

Bernice was employed for 10 years with the Dickson Law Firm, followed by 29 years at the First National Bank of Berwick, with many years as Secretary. She retired in 1985 as Assistant Vice President, and was the first female bank officer in Berwick. She was a member of the National Secretaries Association.

She was a member of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Berwick, where she taught Sunday School for a few years and coordinated waiters and waitresses for many church suppers.

Bernice was a skillful sewer, enjoyed embroidery, and became an avid reader. She enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in Shumans, Pa.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Doyle Herring and her husband Adam Hummel.

She is survived by a son, Robert A. Hummel of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, Linda H. Thomas and her husband Leonard, of Wilmington, Del.; and two grandchildren: Paul A.Thomas and Rebecca L. Myrick.

The memorial service will be held Friday afternoon, May 11th, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1315 Fairview Ave., Berwick, PA with the Rev. Chad Hebrink officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends will be received Friday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.
