Claymont - Stewart Smith “Smitty”, age 89, passed away peacefully on Friday May 25, 2018 surrounded by his family.
He was born in Ohioville Twp, PA and was the son of the late Sidney (Houston) and James Edson Smith. Stewart proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked as an industrial mechanic for 42 years at the former AIRCO and presently Linde Gases, retiring in 1989 as assistant plant superintendent. While working and after retirement Stewart was always busy helping others with his mechanical skills. He also had a lawn service and working on his flower beds was his passion. Stewart’s favorite hobby was being there to assist his family and friends with all of his life skills and amazing abilities.
His wife of 52 years, Mildred K. (Teets) Smith died in 2001. He is survived 3 children, Brian L. (Sandy), Brenda L and Barry H. (Karen), 7 grandchildren, Christopher (Mina), Alyssa (Mike), Lindsey (Tim), Jennifer (Ryan), Kimberly (Billy) Taylor and Rachel (John); 9 great grandchildren; goddaughter, Stacey and many nieces nephews and friends. Stewart was also preceded in death by his 5 siblings and his son Bruce E. Smith in 2005.
A viewing will be held on Friday, June 1, from 6-8 pm at McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington and at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1120 Darley Rd, Wilmington, DE 19810 on Saturday, June 2, from 9-10 am with a celebration of Stewart’s Life to follow at 10 am. Burial will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Trinity Presbyterian Church.
