Walter Anthony Mateja, Sr. (Sonny) 73 of Wilmington, Delaware, peacefully passed away on May 25, 2018 at home due to a chronic illness.
Walt was born in Wilmington, DE to the late Walter Stanley Mateja and Irene Renee Krzyzanowski Mateja. He was happily married to Carol Lalli Mateja for 32 years and resided in Wilmington his entire life. Walt was a professional photographer for nearly 50 years and a former adjunct professor at Delaware Technical & Community College. He attended Salesianum High School and furthered his education at the Philadelphia College of Art and Museum College of Art, and the University of Delaware.
Walt was very active in the community and a member of many charitable organizations: Boy Scouts of America, Alzheimer’s Association, Knights of Columbus, Diocese of Wilmington, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Riverview Cemetery, and the American Cancer Society.
Walt is survived by his beloved wife Carol Lalli Mateja, son Walter A. Mateja, Jr. and wife Susan, daughter Lisa A. Moser and husband Robert, son Ethan Mateja and wife Lisa, son Krystan Mateja and wife Heather, step-son Michael Kananen, step-son Brian Kananen and wife Melissa, step-daughter Laura Kananen, grand-children: Ashely, Ian, Abbey, Mel, Emily, Ellyanna, Sophie, Henry, Waylan, Willoughby, Taylor, Tommy, Mike, Jeremy, Nicole and six great-grandchildren.
Walt was a lover of life and his positivity was infectious to those who knew or encountered him. When asked if the glass was half full or half empty, Walt’s reply would most likely be that he was grateful to have a glass. He always found the goodness in everyone and was truly a forgiving soul, a true gentleman purely defined. He will be deeply missed but always remembered.
Friends may call on Friday, June 1, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington, DE 19810 where a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:00 p.m. Burial will be in Cathedral Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please remember Walt by donating to your favorite charity.
