Wilmington- Helen S. Whitson passed on Thursday, June 28, 2018.
She was born and raised in Pleasantville, NJ to the late John and Cora Sigholz, where she attended grammar school. Upon the family moving to Germantown, PA, Helen attended, Germantown HS, Botello’s Business School, Philadelphia Women’s School of Advertising and Wellesley College Boston, where she received her Certified Travel Agent certificate.
She worked in the Advertising Dept. of Merck Pharmaceuticals in Philadelphia, later moving to Wilmington where she was in the Advertising Dept. of DuPont Fabrics and Finishes. Helen was also employed in the Education Dept. of the Delaware Art Museum. She joined the Bank of Delaware Travel Dept. and moved to Holiday Travel until she and her husband John opened their own agency, Uniglobe Red Carpet Travel.
Helen was an active member of Quota Club International of Wilmington and was the club President, Lt. Governor and Governor of District 10 Quota Club. As an active member of Cathedral Church of St. John in Wilmington, she was President of Episcopal Church Women’s Diocesan Board for 5 years, President of Episcopal Church Women Province III for 3 years, and served on the Bishop’s Council. She also served on the Vestry and Altar Guild. Helen was chosen as Distinguished Episcopal Women of Delaware at the 2012 Episcopal Women’s Triennial Convention.
She has spent many years giving time to Ingleside Retirement Apartments in volunteering. Helen was President of the Ingleside Auxiliary, managed the Gift Shop, did purchasing and arrange for voluntary staff. Helen had a love of travel, family and entertaining, she was known for the fabulous desserts she made.
Helen was also predeceased by her husband of 26 years, John W. Whitson, who died in 1998; sister Elizabeth Muskett; brother-in-law Thomas Muskett and nephew John Muskett. She is survived by her children Robin Klein (Charles), Mark Rachko (Denise), Alan Rachko (Gretchen) and Steve Rachko (Carolann); grandchildren, Stacey Bosak (Rachko), Steven Klein (Kerri), Jeffery Klein(Bob Thayer), Alexandra Rachko, Allison Lynch (Tommy), Dana Rachko and Olivia Anderson (Wade), 9 great grandchildren; nephew Steven Muskett (Terry) and step-son John D. Whitson (Lori).
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 7, at 1:30 pm, at The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew, 719 N Shipley St, Wilmington, DE 19801, where friends may call at the church after 12:30 pm. Burial will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made in Helen’s name to the Sunday Breakfast Mission, 110 N. Poplar St. Wilmington, DE 19801.
