Eugene (Gene) J. Marinelli, age 73, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on July 4, 2018 after a long, courageous battle with leukemia. Gene graduated from Mt. St. Mary’s University in 1968 and proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1968-1970. Retired from the U.S. Government, he worked for the U.S. Treasury as a Revenue Agent for 38 years. There was more to Gene than numbers. He loved baseball, and spent time coaching youth teams in his younger days. Gene was fascinated with history, especially Rome, Civil War, and WWII. He was known in his family for carrying on its Italian winemaking and vegetable gardening traditions, and in his later years he became quite a cook, from tarts to braciole. Most of all, Gene loved spending time with family.

Gene will be deeply missed by his wife of almost 50 years, Karen Marinelli. They were preceded in death by their son, Pasquale M. Marinelli. The rest of his children, Christina L. Marinelli; Angela M. Marinelli (and Jac Cottrell); and Carmen J. Marinelli (and Heather Pyzik Marinelli) will honor their father’s memory by living the values he taught them, especially the importance of family. Whether playing bocce ball, singing tunes, or talking politics, Pop-pop loved spending time with his grandchildren: Will and Sarah Ashmore; and Isabella, Dominic, and Julianna Marinelli.

Gene’s bravery and relentless positive attitude powered him through years against a terminal illness. So did the limitless love and support of family and friends. The family especially thanks Dr. Beardell and staff of DE Clinical & Laboratory Physicians, and the 6th floor nurses of Christiana Hospital, all for their exceptional and compassionate care of Gene.

In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Pasquale M. Marinelli ‘91 Scholarship Fund; Archmere Academy, 3600 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE, 19703. The services and burial will be private.
