Cheryl Hughes-Goldschmidt, of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully on Monday August 13, in her home surrounded by her family. She was 72.

Cheryl was born in Darby, PA in 1946 and was a longtime resident of Lansdowne, PA. She graduated from Harcum College in 1966 and taught nursery school for 20 years, a job she cherished.

Cheryl married Richard J. Goldschmidt on June 12, 1971. She was a mother, foster parent, caregiver to her beloved daughter Dana, and a Nana to many.

Cheryl organized and performed with Kids On The Block puppet program to teach grade school children about people with disabilities, and ran a summer camp for adults with developmental challenges. Cheryl loved animals, musicals, rock painting, swimming with the Mermaids at the YMCA, telling life stories with friends and family. Family was important to her. She was no stranger to hospitals both for her daughter’s care and more recently herself. Cheryl touched the lives of many in the medical profession with her loving personality. She was a giver of love to everyone, and everyone loved her. Cheryl could turn a bummer into a blessing.

Cheryl was predeceased by her parents John and Nancy Hughes, daughter Dana, and brother, John F. Hughes III. She is survived by her devoted husband, Richard, of 47 years; son Drew (Joy) and their children Max and Dashiell; son Brad (Danielle) and their children Evan & Lena; brother Larry Hughes (Bonnie); sister Tina Kelsall (Harvey); brother Tom Hughes (Sherry); brother Edward Hughes (Claire); as well as many nieces and nephews

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11AM on Monday, August 27 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Rd., Wilmington, DE. Guests are invited to begin arriving at 10AM. The family welcomes you to dress informally. Burial will be private.
