Wilmington- John W. Ritchie, age 98, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, August 29, 2018.
He was born in Wilmington and at a young age worked on the family’s farm.
John proudly served his country in WWII in the US Army. He worked for 31 years at General Motors, Boxwood Road, retiring from the electrical repair department in 1980. John was a member of the United Auto Workers, Local 435. He enjoyed his retirement at his summer home in Oak Orchard, off the Indian River. He like to boat and fish. He later became an avid fan of NASCAR, traveling to many of the races in the surrounding states.
John’s wife of 59 years, Edith V. (Elliott), died in 2002. He is survived by his 3 children, Linda R. Birkhead, Wayne A. Ritchie and Deborah A. Barron (Neil); a granddaughter, Jaclyn Hubbard (Matthew) and 3 great-grandchildren, Nathan, Kaelyn and Alicia. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Dr. Newton Birkhead and a sister Mary “Betty” Jones.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, September 9, from 6-8 pm, at McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy(Duncan Rd), Wilmington. A funeral service will be celebrated on Monday, September 10, at McCrery & Harra’s, at 11:30 am. Burial will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
