Maxine Waegel, 96, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on September 2, 2018 in Wilmington.

Maxine Wheeler Waegel was born in Two Buttes, Colorado to Clarence Earl and Lena Hodges Wheeler on January 25, 1922. She grew up and went to school in Conway Springs, Kansas. She graduated from Emporia Teachers College. She married Francis Blair Waegel on April 6, 1943 in Conway Springs. She was a kindergarten teacher all her adult life, teaching in the Alexis I. DuPont (now Red Clay Creek Consolidated) school district at Hockessin, Yorklyn, and North Star schools. After retirement, Maxine and Fran travelled in Europe and Asia, and were enthusiastic square dancers with several local clubs.

Maxine is preceded in death by husband Francis Waegel, and is survived by children Nancy, William, Barbara, Janet, Douglas and Andrew; 9 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandson.

Visitation will be held at 10am Friday, September 7, 2018 at St. Marks United Methodist Church in Stanton. Funeral services will begin at 11am at St. Marks. Burial will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association (
