Jack A. Snyder, a retired Technical Services Manager at E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., Inc., died peacefully on August 23, 2018. The former Hockessin resident was 90.
Jack was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan and graduated from J. W. Sexton High School. He obtained a bachelor’s degree with high honor from Michigan State University and a master’s degree and Ph. D. from the University of Wisconsin. He served in the United States Army from 1945-1947.
Jack held 11 U. S. and numerous foreign patents in the fields of agricultural chemistry and medicinal chemistry. He authored many scientific publications in the fields of carbohydrate chemistry and antiviral and antifertility drug chemistry.
Jack was an accomplished amateur machinist, and he fabricated an astronomical clock now displayed at Mt. Cuba Astronomical Observatory in Greenville, Delaware. He enjoyed photography and music, playing flute with the Diamond State Band and the Newark Community Band.
Jack is survived by his daughters Jane Eickhoff (James) and Anne Tallman, his granddaughter Suzanne Basista (Michael), and his great-grandchildren Connor and Charlotte Basista.
A memorial service will celebrate Jack’s life beginning at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 22 at McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, 19808, where friends may visit beginning at 10:00. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Newark Community Band, P.O.Box 7075 Newark, DE 19714.
