Richard Sterling Widdoes of Newark, DE passed away peacefully surrounded by family after a long and courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at the age of 65.

Richard "Rick" was a loving father, successful contractor and champion athlete. He had a long and successful career as a concrete and masonry contractor, starting R.S. Widdoes & Son in 1980. Rick was also a builder and built over 20 custom homes in New Castle County. Those who knew and worked with him, know he worked hard and partied harder. He respected hard work, believed and proved you could accomplish anything through sheer determination. Rick was an avid athlete, he graduated from Brandywine High School and was a state champ wrestler, during his senior year he was undefeated and was the Blue Hen Conference 165lb Champion. Rick then attended Atlantic County Community College on a wresting scholarship. His true passion and perhaps calling was baseball. As a left handed pitcher and a very fierce competitor, he had a long and exciting career in the Delaware semi-pro league. When he retired he led the league in every major pitching category, including: pitching victories, games started, games pitched, complete games and shutouts. He threw 3 no hitters and 7 one hitters. Rick truly enjoyed the outdoors and loved walking in the woods with his faithful Labrador companions Chocolate and Sandy. He also enjoyed the beach, fishing and boating, as well as rock-n-roll. He often would pull up to a job site to check on his crew, wearing his trademark sunglasses with music playing. As life progressed, Rick thoroughly enjoyed working side by side with his son and seeing the succession of the family business.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents Jay and Marjorie Widdoes, brother Jim and faithful lab Chocolate. He is survived by his son Michael Widdoes (Sara), sister Mary Ann Redman (Herb), brother Steve, former wife Denise, and many nieces and nephews, as well as his lab Sandy.
