JOHN MCMINN

John L. McMinn, age 73, of Philadelphia, PA, formerly of Wilmington, DE, died on Tuesday, September 11th, at his home in Philadelphia.

John graduated from Henry C. Conrad High School, Woodcrest, DE, in 1963. He served in the US Army, in Vietnam, from September 1965 and was honorably discharged in June 1967. John then worked at various thoroughbred racetracks, as an assistant trainer, for most of his adult life. He was respected for his hard work, dedication, responsibility, and excellent horsemanship. Although John retired from thoroughbred horse training several years ago, he continued to admire and follow horse racing. He was an active, exuberant personality, who kept working in Philadelphia, where he gained the admiration and love of his employers and the community he served. John was greatly appreciated for his kindness and compassion, as well as well known, and sought after for his non-judgmental, caring manner. He was an avid reader, historian, and Jeopardy aficionado extraordinaire.

John was a beloved brother, confidant, and friend to his surviving siblings: Irma Jean McMinn, Wilmington DE, Diane E. McMinn, Wilmington DE, Nancy J. McMinn, Millsboro DE, Janis L. McMinn, Elsmere DE, Harry L. McMinn III (Linda), New Castle DE, and Robert K. McMinn III (Lorena), Ocala FL. He is also survived by six nephews, Jason McMinn, Michael Taylor Jr, Adam Taylor, Paul McMinn, Brian McMinn, and Harry McMinn IV, four nieces, Jennie Williams, Leah Taylor, Nicole McMinn, and Beth McMinn, as well as eighteen great nieces and nephews, and two great, great nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, Jennie E. Richards-McMinn, and Harry L. McMinn II, many years ago. John loved and fully recognized the full worth of his extended family, and his multitude of friends. His humble appreciation for the loving attention he received gave him pause, full of emotion and steadfast loyalty.

John’s tireless, loving presence will be missed by all who knew him.

Graveside Service at Riverview Cemetery will be private.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 22 at 12 noon at the John C. Anderson Senior Apartments in the Community Room, 251 S. 13th St. (between Spruce and Locust) Philadelphia, PA.
