George H. Huber, Sr., age 94, surrounded by his family, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15, 2018.
He was born in Wilmington and was the son of the late Elsie Pearl (Ward) and Jacob Frederick Huber. He attended Brown Vocational HS and at the age of 16, he proudly enlisted in the US Navy just prior to WWII. George was awarded a medal for saving a fellow shipmate’s life while he was on the USS New Mexico. He later served on the USS Dayton. George was a Heavyweight Boxing Champion in the Navy. After the war for a brief time he was a professional boxer. He then started his own house painting company, “George Huber”, and then” George Huber Coatings”. Along the 50 years, he grew it into a highly successful industrial painting and sand blasting company, Coatings Inc., retiring in 1997.
George was a member of the Stone Harbor, NJ American Legion. He enjoyed spending time at his summer home in Avalon.
George is preceded in death by his first wife Tessie (Shaposka), his second wife, Helen (Meara), 2 children, Gary L. and Dennis E., Sr. and his 8 siblings. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Elaine (Strolli); 2 children, George H, Jr. (Joyce) and Karen H. Brady (Steve), 6 grandchildren, Daniel (Elizabeth), Sarah, Kevin, Curtis (Beverly), Christopher and Dennis, Jr. (Kristen); 5 great-grandchildren, Arleigh, Celeste, Dawson, Karrington and Kendrick and 2 daughters-in-law, Nora and Diane.
A viewing will be held on Thur., Sept. 20, from 10-11 am, at The Chapel at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Hwy, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will follow at 11am. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
