John Louis Medkeff, Sr., 77 years of age, passed away at his home in Wilmington on October 14, 2018. A native of Wilmington, John was born on January 23, 1941 to Samuel Logan Medkeff and Mary Philomena Boyle.
All of his days, John cherished memories of his childhood on Rockford Road and time spent in Kentmere and the Forty Acres. He attended St. Ann’s and Wilmington High schools. He worked at J. Bancroft & Sons before entering the National Guard. Upon discharge from his post at Ft. Knox, KY, John returned to Wilmington to work as a delivery man for Capital Bakery. Afterwards, he worked at the same position for Pepperidge Farm, Inc. of Downingtown, PA, delivering goods to clients across Chester County. When a work injury forced his early retirement in 1972, John became a doting father and proverbial “house husband”.
In his spare time, John enjoyed socializing at bingos, working on computers, and participating in social media. He had a terrific Irish baritone singing voice and particularly loved the music of Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, and Eddie Arnold. Most important of all, he was the most loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather that his family could have ever hoped for.
John is survived by his wife of 27 years, Joyce A., son John L., Jr. (Tina A.); daughter Suzanne (Charles D. Lee); and brother Michael K., all of Wilmington, as well as scores of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. The lights of John’s life were his grandchildren Jessee C. Lee, Jaymee M. Lee, Logan J. Medkeff, and Julia A. Lee, and great-grandsons Finlee and Kameron Salomon. John is joined in heaven with his parents, ex-wife Patricia A. McGough, and siblings Samuel J., Bernard, Ann, Kathleen C., Thomas B., Mary Ann, Gerald L., and Allen J.
Funeral services will be private. A celebration of John’s life will be announced at a later date. To send condolences visit:
