MARO A. “MARY” YILANCIOGLU

Mary A. Yilancioglu passed away peacefully from complications of a muscle movement disorder associated with Parkinson's disease, on Monday, October 29, 2018 at Foulk Manor North retirement home. She was 74.

Mary was born on May 20,1944 in Heliopolis (Cairo), Egypt, to the late Haroutoun and Siranoush Toufayan. She attended Armenian/Christian based schools in Egypt, and took post-secondary school classes at the city’s business/clerical college. Mary was very active in the community, spending countless hours at the local Armenian community centers, socializing with her siblings and cousins on their basketball, volleyball, and Ping-Pong teams. Besides her native language of Armenian, through school and immersion of a multi-cultural country, Mary became fluent in English, Arabic, French and Greek.

Accompanied by her parents, in search of greater opportunity, she was the last of her siblings to immigrate to the USA in 1963. Resettling in Union City, NJ, Mary found steady employment at a local Tootsie Roll factory. In 1967 she married Kirk, and moved to Brandywine Hundred to begin a family. Initially a homemaker, Mary realized she loved working with people. In the late 70's, she worked for Customer Service at Almart, which eventually became Jefferson-Ward, at Concord Mall. After serving lunches for 20+ years to the kids at Talley Junior High School, Mary retired in 2003 from the Brandywine School District, Food Service Dept. In the 80's and 90's Mary also worked part time at Foulk Manor North as an Activities Coordinator, she organized bingo games and bartended to the seniors there. Ironically, Foulk Manor is where Mary had to spend her final 3 years. Mary simply loved interacting, serving and helping others, while placing smiles on their faces.

Mary and her late husband Kirk were married for 50 faithful and loving years. They loved spending time with their large families, traveling the world, and spending lazy weekends at Cape Henlopen and Rehoboth beaches. In addition to attending every game of her sons’ baseball teams, Mary would be heard whistling loudly and cheering her sons from the stands, at the fields of Brandywine Little League.

Mary is survived by her sons, Peter and Ara; her two brothers, Kirkor and Hratch Toufayan; her sister, Armine Pechdimaldji and her brother-in-law’s and sister’s-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, and her two beloved grandchildren, Mark and Natalie Yilanjian.

Friends may call on Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 11 AM to 12 PM at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. A Memorial Service will begin at Noon.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are enthusiastically encouraged to the St. Sahag-St. Mesrob Armenian Church in Piladelphia, Foulk Manor North (checks made payable to the Employee Christmas Fund) or to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s disease research.
