In the early morning hours of Saturday, January 12, 2019, Milton Zackary Furches, age 91, was transported from this life into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born in Raetown, TN, to Ella Mae and Zackariah Furches, Zack had made his residence in Elkton, MD, for the past 26 years.

Mr. Furches left Tennessee and moved to Elkton in the early 1940s until he was old enough to enter the Army in 1943, serving his country in WWII. After returning from the Pacific in 1948, he settled in Delaware where several other family members were currently residing. He married his childhood sweetheart, Wanda Anne White, on September 11, 1948, in the Elkton Wedding Chapel. Zack and his wife eventually settled in Hockessin, DE, where they raised their five children.

Part of the “greatest generation,” Zack (which he preferred over Milton) worked in Wilmington as a welder constructing the liberty ships until he was old enough to enter the war. After returning to the states, he worked for Chrysler until he became an electronic technician after completing studies in the field of electrical science. He spent most of this career in that field until his retirement from Sears in 1994.

Although he had not actively attended church for the past several years, Mr. Furches was involved with church planting and building for years. Serving on the board of New Castle Baptist Church in the 1950s, he was involved in moving the church to its current location. He and a small group of families also founded Newark Baptist Church in the 1960s. For years he drove a bus to church, transporting children to Sunday School, and fulfilled other roles in the churches where he served.

Zack loved history, politics and cars. He enjoyed traveling to historical sites and going on family vacations.

Zack is predeceased by Anne, his wife of 67 years, as well as their eldest daughter Myra Daniels, and eldest grandson Milton H. Weaver. He is survived by daughter Gail White of Arkansas and her husband Perry; daughter Monica Richardson of Elkton, MD and her husband William; daughter Rhonda Norris of Elkton, MD and her husband Mark; and son Reverend Zackary Furches and his wife Rebekah of Clinton, CT. He is also blessed with grandchildren Gabriel Furches, Luke Furches and Sarah Furches of Clinton, CT; as well as two great-grandsons, Christian Weaver and Officer Bradley Weaver. His last surviving sibling, Dorothy Martin, resides in Vero Beach, FL.

A visitation will be held on January 21, 2019 from 10:00-11:00 am at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808, where a service will follow at 11:00 am. Interment will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, DE. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Assoc. Delaware Valley Chapter, 399 Market St., Suite 102, Phila.
