Virginia S. “Ginnie” Wood, age 95, of Wilmington died on January 14, 2019. She was born in Morristown, New Jersey to James and Eleanor Shapleigh.

Ginnie graduated from P.S. du Pont High School and matriculated to Duke University where she received a Bachelor of the Arts degree. After graduation she worked as a secretary at Hercules. However, she felt a call to teach and acquired a teaching certificate from the University of Delaware. This proved to be a wise move, as teaching was a natural fit. Ginnie excelled as an educator and had a rewarding career as a 3rd grade teacher at Carrcroft Elementary for 30 years.

Beloved by her peers, students, and parents, she received the Recognition of Excellence Award. A life-long learner, she continued to study her craft, keeping abreast of the latest ideas and research. She backed up her pedagogical knowledge with a joy for learning, and she passed on that enthusiasm for learning and reading to her students.

While teaching was her career, Ginne also loved watching her granddaughter learn and grow. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, music, crafts, exercising, and enjoyed traveling extensively during her retirement years.

Ginnie is survived by her daughter Diane E. Wood of Wilmington, son David A. Wood of Wilmington, granddaughter Jennifer M. Spencer of Bear, and two great-grandchildren Jacksen and Cassandra.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and caregivers at Foulk Manor North and Foulk Manor South for the wonderful care they provided.

Keeping with her wishes, services will be private. Burial will take place at Lower Brandywine Cemetery.
