WILLIAM G. O’CONNOR

Age 80, of Newark passed on January 21 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Tyrone, PA to the late Edna (Beamer) and Clair Francis O’Connor. He graduated from Altoona High School in 1956 and from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1960.

He moved to Delaware in 1962 and began his career as a Spanish teacher and football coach at Claymont High School. He moved on to A.I. DuPont High School in 1967 where he taught until his retirement in 2000. During his time at A.I., he had a distinguished career as both an assistant and head coach of the football team, leading the Tigers to several conference championships and state tournament appearances. His coaching career also included stints as A.I.’s golf coach and the head football coach at McKean HS. He was inducted into A.I.’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. Very important to Bill was his involvement in the annual Blue-Gold All Star Football Game, which benefits the DFRC, a Delaware foundation dedicated to raising funds and support for Delawareans with intellectual disabilities. Bill spent many years as a coach and camp director in support of this worthwhile cause.

Bill was predeceased by his brothers Clair Francis (Irish) O’Connor, Jr., and Robert Lee O’Connor and his sister, Thelma Jane (T.J.) Tutko. Bill is survived by his wife, Barbara J. (Greenwell) O’Connor to whom he was married for a wonderful 52 years; his son, Michael and his wife Sharon; his daughter, Beth and her husband Mark Dewey. Bill’s pride and joy were his four granddaughters who were blessed to call him Pop-Pop. They are Kayla and Emily O’Connor and Erin and Mara Dewey. He also leaves behind many other family members and friends who meant so much to him.

A visitation will be held at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington from 6 to 8 pm on Friday Jan 25th. A Memorial Service will be conducted at the funeral home the following day, Jan 26th at Noon with a visitation beginning at 11:00 am. Burial will be private.
