MARY SOWDEN

On Saturday, June 1st, Mary Lois (Frederick) Sowden passed away, surrounded by her beloved family. She was 91 years old.

Mary was born in Moosic, PA on September 12, 1927. Her family moved to East Falls, PA where she met and married her devoted husband, Alfred Sowden. In 1956, Mary and Al moved their family to Wilmington, Elsmere to be exact, where Mary spent the rest of her life. Family was of the utmost importance to Mary. Her family was her pride and joy: her 4 children- Barbara Nowell (Bob), Beverly Falkowski (Ron), Al (Jane), and Scot (Ann); her 12 grandchildren: Brooke Balan (Jason), Jenni Falkowski, Ron Falkowski (Susan), Andrew Falkowski (Tracy), Tim Sowden (Courtney), Amy O’Neill (Rich), Bob Sowden, Beth Sowden (Bryan Wade), Scot Sowden (Marie), Shane Sowden (Kara), Shannon Taylor (Mike), and Stephanie Sowden; and her 11 great grandchildren: Morgan and Parker Balan; Owen, Claire and Wyatt Falkowski; Carlene, Scot and Julia Sowden; Colleen and Natalie Sowden; Audrey Taylor.

Mary and Al were married for 49 years before Al passed away in 1995. Mary was also preceded in death by her parents, Alexander and Leona Frederick, and her 3 siblings; Martha Berkheiser, Laura Pudvan, and Alexander (Bud) Frederick, as well as a great granddaughter, Kathryn Falkowski.

Mary was primarily, and most importantly, a get up and go mom. She could always be found attending any and all activities for all the family. Froggy voice and all, she could be heard by everyone cheering for whomever was playing, regardless of the sport. She would even keep her own “stats” to be delivered to her athlete at the end of the game. In addition to spending time with her grandchildren, Mary enjoyed scouring yard sales with her sister, Laura. Another favorite past time was traveling with her husband and family, most notably her visits to Majorca, Australia, Nevis, and Mexico. After spending several years caring for Al at home and in the VAMC nursing home, Mary volunteered there for 17 more years. She would report to “work” at 3:30am to start the laundry for the day, going on to accumulate close to 18,000 hours as a Marine Corps League volunteer.

Mary’s family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Rose Holmes. Because of Rose’s care, compassion, and support, Mary was able to spend her final years at home. We are eternally grateful to Rose for her dedication.

Visitation will be held Monday, June 10th, from 6 to 8pm at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway. Additional visitation will be held from 9 to 10am, Tuesday morning, with the service immediately following. Burial will be private.
