Di Virgilio, Raymond

Raymond Di Virgilio, a long-time resident of Elkton, MD, passed away on December 17, 2021 at the age of 90. Born August 24, 1931 in Marshallton, DE, he was the son of the late Giuseppe Di Virgilio and Maria Loreta De Grandis.

He was predeceased by his wife Barbara (nee Stigile) and siblings Charles, Tony, Oley, William (“Pete”), Mafalda Allison, and Yolanda. He is survived by his daughter Donna (Brian) Hayden; son Michael (Kelly Donovan) Di Virgilio; brother Amedeo (“Mitty”) Di Virgilio; sister Elizabeth (Wayne) Racine; grandchildren Siri Ramakrishna (Greg Shaw), Carlee Hayden (John Dearden), Anna Van Sice, Giovannina Di Virgilio, Cole Hayden, and Michelangelo Di Virgilio; great-grandchildren Logan and Luna; and many nieces and nephews.

He served in the 3rd US Infantry Division (The Old Guard) and was stationed in Washington, DC. He retired from CSX Transportation in 1993 and was a proud 50-plus year member of the SMART Transportation Division, formerly the United Transportation Union. He was a life member of the Mill Creek Fire Company. A man of many talents, he was an avid gardener, a cook, a hunter, a fisherman, and a renowned poker player. He was proud of his family’s origins in Torino di Sangro, Chieti, Abruzzo and loved telling stories and maintaining traditions. More than anything, he was proud of his family and all their accomplishments.

A visitation for family and friends will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home at 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE where a memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM. The family requests that masks be worn by all in attendance regardless of vaccination status. Interment will be private.
