Hazel Leona Wilson, nee Kessler, 81, of Wilmington DE, formerly of Claymont, DE passed away at home on Sunday May 22, 2022.
Hazel graduated Bartram High School in Philadelphia PA in 1957 where she was a majorette.
In her younger years Hazel was an accomplished roller skater and she kept those skills well into her adult life where she was quite the showoff at church outings at Elsmere Roller Rink.
Hazel’s work outside the home was varied, much like her interests, and she was never afraid of a new challenge. She was a beloved school bus driver and worked in retail at Strawbridge and Clothier. Another retail job was with Loder’s Sewing and Vacuum where she also got to share her passion for sewing as an instructor in their sewing classes. Later in life she learned the art of making stained glass and jewelry, gifting many pieces to her family. Other interests included board and card games, especially Skippo, gardening, reading and spider solitaire.
She is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Biddle Wilson Sr. in 2000. She is survived by her Children James L. Martin of TX, Valarie L. Martin of Claymont, DE, Deborah J Martin of Wilmington, DE and her partner Rebecca Higgons, Kenneth B. Wilson Jr. and his wife Dianna of Harrington, DE, David W. Wilson and his wife Kelly of Wilmington, DE. Her local grandchildren Mark A. Wilson who was also one of her caregivers for many years and Kenneth B. Wilson III and many other grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her brothers Albert L. Kessler and his wife Dianna of Cornville AZ. and Mark W. Kessler and his wife Shelby of Avondale, PA . Sadly, Christina Martin, Hazels beloved sister, preceded her in death by 1 day on May 21st.
The family will be having a joint Celebration of Life for Hazel and her Sister Christina Martin this Saturday, May 28 starting at 9am at McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington DE 19803. Hazel’s burial will be private.
