With great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Allan J. Brinton, Sr. (Al) of Wilmington, Delaware, on February 27, 2023, at the age of 80.
Al was born on March 10, 1942, to Milford and Mary Brinton of Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated from Wilmington High School and attended Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
After graduation, Al landed his first job as a lab technician in the Textile Fibers department for the DuPont Company. His role there kickstarted a remarkable 43-year career in which he participated in the research and production of many brands that made DuPont a household name. He retired in 2008.
Al met his wife, Jane Gackenbach, in 1963. They married and had two children, Allan John, Jr., and Christina Elizabeth.
Al was never one to sit still. He was an active volunteer of the Talleyville Fire Company, where he was the hook and ladder tillerman (as a kid, it was very cool to watch.) He was also an avid hunter, conservationist, and outdoorsman involved with many organizations, such as the Bombay Hook Wildlife Refuge, Ducks Unlimited, and the National Rifle Association.
After retirement, Al enjoyed leisurely lunches with friends at Stoney’s Pub in Wilmington. He also spent time skeet shooting on the eastern shore at the DuPont Fish and Game Club, where he developed many lifelong friendships, including Ralph, Carl, Huffy, and others. In addition to his love of the outdoors, Al found joy in caring for his many hunting beagles and pets.
Those who knew Al knew him as a loving, dedicated husband and father who instilled countless good habits in all of us. He is predeceased by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Brinton, father Milford Jackson Brinton, wife Jane, and daughter, Christina. Al is survived by his brother Milford (Oleta), his son Allan (Laura), and their children, Thomas, Caroline, and William.
Al’s burial will be private, and his life will be celebrated at a future date. To send condolences visit: www.mccreryandharra.com
