Roy A. Birl, age 80, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at the Wilmington Hospital.
He was born and raised in Upland, PA. and is the son of the late Ethel (Brown) and Adam Birl. He was also preceded in death by his father’s second wife, Claire Birl and his step-sister, Harriet Julian.
Roy attended St. Roberts Grade School and graduated from Ridley Park High School in 1962. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Viet Nam War where he was stationed in Germany.
After many years in the banking industry, Roy retired from Wells Fargo Bank June 1998.
Roy enjoyed woodcarvings, general carpentry, chess, basketball, fantasy football and snow skiing which he continued to do well into his senior years.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, (together for 32 years) Carol A. Birl, his children, grandchildren, his sister Margaret (Raymond) Linden, cousins, goddaughter, nieces, nephews many friends and neighbors who will truly miss him. Roy will also be greatly missed by his loyal fur-buddy, Wilson.
The ROMEO breakfasts (Retired Old Men Eating Out) and annual ski trips to the mountains won’t be the same without him. All who knew Roy agreed the earthquake on April 5 was his way of saying—“Sayonara —- See ya down the road………..”
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 15 from 9:30-10:30 am at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE where a celebration of life will follow at 10:30 am. Burial will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Roy’s name be made to your favorite charity.
