Anderson, Gloria

Gloria Faith (Luchanin) Anderson passed away comfortably and peacefully on May 14, 2024, in her home. She was born February 27, 1930, to the late Charles Luchanin and the late Anna (Fanok) Luchanin. She grew up in Minersville, Pennsylvania, where she had fun with friends and classmates at football games (she was a majorette), dances, and other social events. She had a deep love of music, especially Classical, and a passion for poetry, Shakespeare, and French. She was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated with High Honors from Minersville High School in 1947.

She pursued a Registered Nursing degree at Temple University Hospital, where she participated in the Glee Club and Nurses basketball team (they played half court, which she later said was boring). She then earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Temple and was Clinical Supervisor of Obstetrics at Temple University Hospital.

She married Peter G. Anderson in St. George’s Ukrainian Church in Minersville in May 1955. She worked as a nurse in labor and delivery at Memorial Hospital, Wilmington, Delaware, and then, with Peter, opened Delaware’s first private medical laboratory, Physicians’ Clinical Laboratory.

Known for her fun tailgate parties at University of Delaware football games, Gloria was a true blue Blue Hen. She knew the stats of every player, including their GPAs, and followed those who went on to become professionals. She also loved the marching band, to whom she would pass boxes of crackers and cans of sodas through open windows on their bus leaving the stadium. She could be found every August on the beach at Ocean City, New Jersey. She loved sunning and swimming and being with her family there. At home, she could be found playing in the dirt…in her vegetable and flower gardens in the backyard and around the patio. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed trying new recipes, and feeding everyone who stopped by. She enjoyed cheering on her grandchildren on the field and on the ice. She was their biggest fan and was so very proud of who they are as young adults.

Gloria will be missed deeply by her son, Peter Mark Anderson (Susan Ann); daughter Joanne C. Anderson (MJ Bishop); daughter Susan A. Donlin (Thomas); and grandchildren Halley Donlin, Peter Anderson, Margo Donlin. She had many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much. She loved when they could come for a long stay, or visit at the family cabin in the Pocono Mountains.

Her family would like to give heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Shipley Living and to AccentCare Hospice Services for their support. They would like to give special mention to Glo’s loving aide, Mandi Lane, who quickly became a part of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider supporting Mandi’s Feeding Ministry. You may send checks in Gloria’s memory to St. Matthews Church, 2349 Thomas Ave., Upper Chichester, PA 19014, and include “Mandi’s Feeding Ministry” in the memo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am, Monday, May 20 at Saint Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 7 Sharpley Road, Wilmington, DE 19803, where visitation will be held immediately before Mass from 10-11. Entombment will follow the Mass at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N Dupont Hwy New Castle, DE 19720.
