Jan Westerhouse passed away on May 17, 2024.
She was born in Wolcott, Indiana to the late Lucille Keller and Hank Westerhouse.
In 1995, she woke from a dream and said: Tom, we have to move to Arden, Delaware. Soon after moving to her home, she became actively involved in the community. She served in Arden on the Registration and Community Planning committees. With a great love of books and words, Jan found her true home with the Shakespeare, Ardensingers and Library Gilds of the Arden Club.
Jan was unfailingly positive and enthusiastic - and connected to the world - reading, exploring, and learning! She was one of 12 graduating seniors of Wolcott High School, Indiana. At Perdue University, she received her Bachelor’s degree in Speech and Audiology. Jan continued her education, obtaining a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from Indiana University. Jan was noted for her expertise in speech therapy for adults with communication disorders. Her professional career as a speech pathologist included Crozer Hospital., Chief of Speech at Temple Hospital and Director of Speech Pathology Delaware Curative Workshop. She was an active member of multiple professional groups. Her leadership was evident in roles such as President of the Delaware Speech and Hearing Association and nationally as legislative counsel member of the American Speech and Hearing Association.
Upon her retirement, Jan, ever eager to learn and be involved, enrolled in the University of Delaware’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. She took the range of classes- her favorite topics being Constitutional Law, Unsung Heroes of Folk Music, and Current Issues-Lecture and Discussion.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Tom Wheeler. Her extended family included of six brothers and sisters in- laws, 6 nieces and nephews and their spouses, and 5 great nieces and nephews. Jan was happy, vibrant, witty and selfless and is already missed by her family and friends.
