Russell W. Knapp, age 97, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 19, 2024 at his home in Wilmington Delaware.
Born on July 4, 1927, in Bronx, New York, Russell lived a life marked by dedication to his marriage, family, career, and country. In 1950, Russell married his sweetheart Mary Russell and together they moved from New York to Wilmington, Delaware to start their life together. Russell embarked on a successful career at Knapp Mills, where he provided operational leadership for the company. Following his time at Knapp Mills, he continued his career at Mannington Mills until his retirement in 1987.
Russell was preceded in death by his wife Mary and son David. He is survived by his three children: Laura (Evan) of Wilmington DE, Douglas (Lynne) of Marietta GA, and Russell (Annamarie) of Downingtown PA. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren and delighted in the company of his eight great-grandchildren. Beyond his professional achievements, Russell was an avid reader and a sailor who found joy on the open water. He also devoted significant time to a family business that he managed for many years and found pleasure in researching and documenting the family’s genealogy roots. Russell served his country with honor during World War 2, enlisting in the Navy and serving aboard the USS Princeton.
As per Russell’s request, no funeral or memorial service will be held.
