Age 90, of Smyrna, DE died at peace with the world on August 7, 2024. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Donald Lee Marvel, her son Don Neal Marvel and his wife Elke Pessl.
She was born in Camden, DE to the late Neal Martin and Sara Elizabeth (Scott) Oechsler and grew up in Camden, Wyoming and Smyrna, later moving to the Wilmington area and eventually returning to live in Smyrna year-round in 2021.
Her home was important to Joanne and she took great pleasure in hosting and entertaining those she cared about. She cherished her friends and family and enjoyed many life-long friendships.
Joanne was a graduate of the University of Delaware and an elementary school teacher, teaching at Smyrna Elementary and later at Faulk Elementary School in Wilmington.
She loved musicals, especially ‘Meet Me in St. Louis’, and was a child at heart with a life-long delight in Disney World and Christmas. Her favorite color was blue and she liked to collect images and sculptures of rabbits. Once she got over her fear of flying, she started to travel more widely and enjoyed traveling many times each year.
A viewing will be held on Monday, August 19, 2024 from 11:00-12:00 at Asbury United Methodist Church, 20 W. Mt. Vernon Street, Smyrna, DE 19977 where a service will follow at 12:00. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden. To send condolences visit: www.mccreryandharra.com
