John K. Lobley, age 71 of Newark, DE passed away peacefully on Monday, August 19, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Somerville, NJ and raised in Newport, DE and is the son of the late Mae (McGarry) and Edwin Lobley. John was a 1970 graduate of Conrad High School and later received his Bachelors of Science Degree from Widener University.
He met the love of his life Gayle Scherer in their church youth group. They married in 1974 and started their family. Most recently they were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with their closest family and friends.
John started his career as a Journeyman Lineman for IBEW Local 126, moving to Delmarva Power and Light where he continued as a lineman advancing into various managerial positions until retiring in 2009. After retirement he consulted in the industry until 2021.
John proudly served his country in the Army Reserves and was an active member of Masonic Unity Lodge # 32 where he served as Lodge Master. He was a passionate and dedicated coach to both his children and was president of both Kirkwood and Hockessin Soccer Clubs. He enjoyed fishing and boating and loved his years spent at the family beach house in Greenbackville, VA. John found pleasure in cooking and entertaining with friends. Above all, he cherished attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and time spent with family.
Along with his wife of 50 years, Gayle S. Lobley, he is survived by his two children, Brent Lobley and wife Abbie and Jennifer Harden and husband Stephen; four grandchildren, Mara & Quinn Lobley and Chase & Lauren Harden. In addition, John is survived by three siblings, Edwin Lobley (Linda), Susan Rhoades (Rev. Stephen) and Mark Lobley (Karen).
A viewing will be held on Sunday, August 25, from 5-7 pm at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 26 at 11 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Red Clay Creek Cemetery.
